Ruby with medium to low transparency. The nose imposes itself with aromas of underbrush such as mushrooms and then blackberry, violet infusion, licorice, dried figs and mint in an empty glass. On the palate the tannin is still a bit astringent but counterbalanced by a nice concentration and the warm note of alcohol.

You never forget your first love, so they say. And the first, fantastic bottle that won me over from Tenuta di Saragano was a Montefalco Rosso. Blend: 60% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 15% Sgranino. Eighteen months in French barriques – second passage – and at least a year in the bottle. The result is a ruby red wine of the most elegant kind, which hits you as soon as you taste it with your nose. That’s right: you should taste it first and foremost with your nose. The evolution of the aromas is pure elegance and unique refinement. Ripe red fruits, underbrush, balsamic notes. Then the drinking ravishes: a marvel – it goes down smoothly – with a mouth that always remains fresh thanks to refined tannin. A meditative wine while not strictly for meditation, and one that can be described, in all honesty, as generous.

It elides a nice array of scents where I find black cherry in syrup, blueberry, licorice, aromatic tobacco, sweet spices. On the sip it is obviously impactful, generous in declaring itself thanks to a still vibrant tannic savoriness that together with an elegant final savory trail make this Montefalco Rosso an expressive wine and a first approach to the philosophy of Tenuta di Saragano
